How to Make Chaos Chariots of Nurgle
One of the most annoying things about Citadel is not their prices. It is the way in which they leave holes in their Army Lists and do not make all miniatures for particular army available. Such is the case with Chaos chariots - although they have been on Chaos army list since the begining of Chaos, GW does not have appropriate models available. They had a somewhat nice chariot available in 80s but locating one of those models today is like looking for beauty in Nagash's hat. On a positive note, a problem like this does one good thing - it forces you to convert a miniature on your own, and if you like converting like me, and do not plan to use this chariots in official GW tournament (my conversions are not all Citadel/Marauder parts) than read on. This page deals with how I made my 3 chariots (also known as Purple, Blue and Green after the colors used for steeds barding) and what bits and minis I used to convert. So on with it:
This chariot is based on the old citadel Chaos chariot. Chariot body (chassis and fairing) are from the old Citadel model. Standard pole, although converted, started its life as a lance for chaos chariot. The wheels are from Grenadier's model "Orc General's War Chariot" which in itself could be used to base Chaos chariot on. Aditional chariot details include chain reins, nurgling, wolf's head ornament from my bitz box and skull hanging of the chain.
Driver is the original driver with a whip. Second rider is old Chaos thug with bow.
Steeds are standard war horses that I converted into Chaos steeds by adding wicked tail and Chaos steed head to one and skeletal leg and giant claws to the other. Also, I covered the saddle area with putty and after painting it it looks like full barding.
Also, since both chaos steeds and chariot body are separate pieces it is a good idea to have movement tray for a whole piece.
BLUE CHARIOT - pics coming up
This chariot is based on Grenadier's Undead Chariot. Main body, and I think wheels come from that model. Body of these chariots looks great with a lot of skelletal motifs on the fairing. Aditional details include shield and quiver of arrows on the right side of fairing (hmmm, there are 3 arrow quivers total on chariot, but no archers...), Nurglesque head hanging of one side, nurgling, skull ornament and reins for the driver.
This driver is also original citadel chariot driver, although I bent his whip into different position. The second charioteer is an old thug model with heavy armor, cloak and scythe.
Steeds were converted into full barding as with Purple chariot. One has a Chaos Steed head, another bright red scorpion tail.
GREEN CHARIOT - pics coming up
This one is smallest of three. It is based on Ral Partha's Crodlu Light War Chariot - main body and wheels come from it. There are few more converted details including reins, head hanging of the fairing (from one of plastic Necromunda Goliaths), and big skeletal motif on yoke. I made it by cutting up Ral Partha's undead Balrog miniature.
Driver is an old Dark Elf Beastmaster with whip who looks Chaotic enough. Second rider is armored thug with axe and shield.
Steeds are converted into full barding as others and one has long scaly tail, while another has head from one of High Elf Dragon Princes steed (!). Why not, it looks chaotic enough.
Some more tips...
Here are some other chariots that you could base yours on (in adition to 3 mentioned above):
RAL PATHA'S Goblin War Chariot (#02-060) - if you are a goblin player, this is an incredible model as well. If you can find out-of-print items than GRENADIER'S Amazon Attack Chariot (#5302), Undead Chariot (#5301), Orc General's War Chariot (#9005). CITADEL'S Grom's War chariot and Goblin Chariot might do the trick with some serious converting.
War Horses can be bought separately from GW, I think they cost $1.00 or $2.00 a piece.
If you make steeds and chariot body separate (so that you can remove steed casualties) it is a good idea to make a movement tray that steeds and chariot will fit on.
